granddaughter of Albert "Bert" Jonas, a theatrical agent famous for giving many Afro-American entertainers their "breaks" in the theatrical business. She is also the sister of actor Darrell Judith Jonas.

Sadly, soon after the GODSPELL film was released, Joanne left the theatrical/film scene. She now lives in the mountains of Northern California with her husband Rollin and their son Josh.

Character notes:
Sassy and slightly cynical, the most urban of the group. Also the "sexy" one, but her sexiness contains a large element of put-on, in the manner of Mae West or Madonna(who in fact once played this role).

My thoughts:
"I've always admired Joanne, and she seems the type that would be fit for every other movie role you see out there. It surprised me that she didn't star in at least a couple other films, considering the fact she's a talented dancer, singer, and actress rolled into one. I admire her inner strength and spirit she portrays in the film."

Joanne Rose Jonas was born on May 31, 1951, in the Bronx, New York City, New York. She was an original cast member of GODSPELL in it's off-Broadway production, first at the Cherry Lane Theatre in 1971, and later uptown at the Promenade where it ran for 2,124 performances. Joanne originally created the character that Lynne Thigpen portrays on film, but when it came time for the movie, their roles were swapped. She took on the role that was originally Sonia Manzano's, singing 'Turn Back, O Man'. Joanne also had the credit of assistant choreographer in the film version.
